Have you ever wanted to ask a chef “How did you do that, you make it look so easy?” Or “Would you mind showing me that trick?”  Well let me tell you about the place where you can ask just such a question or two, try some great wine and even taste some incredible food. At a Cooking Class/Chef Demonstration which seem to be happening all over the place.

Some types of classes are hosted by your neighborhood market or gourmet markets, cooking schools, wine shops or- if you live in wine country- wineries. The hosts of these classes or chef demos feature a variety of chefs- each showing off their specialty cuisine or style. I’m very privileged to live here in Yakima Valley Wine Country and can do chef demos and classes at a number of places.

There are also different types of cooking class programs offered. Some are solely chef demonstrations where lots of questions can be asked of the chef and usually there’s a wine education component that has each course served/paired with wine (you’re able to see both how the food and wine change as the two are tasted separately and together). The other type of class is more of a cooking class with you, the students/participants, in the kitchen working side by side with the chef. As each of the students participate in the program they rotate throughout the kitchen- from appetizer to dessert- with the finale being the large family style dinner served at the end of the class featuring the main course and all the sides.

These classes are a fun way to learn about a new cuisine or style of cooking, a fun night out with a good friend and often a good meal. Remember, the only bad/dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. Except the one I heard the other day…
